Dave was kind enough to pick this cigar up for me the last time he was a Silo cigars, along with a few others, because there aren't many shops near me that carry this brand. I had smoked a few Pinar del Rio's before and wanted to try a couple more and see how they smoked. Dave reviewed this cigar a bit ago and you can read his thoughts here. I might have had one of these in another size, but I can't be sure. I smoked one of these for this review.
The wrapper on this cigar was a very nice dark chocolate brown with some darker mottling to it. It also had a good amount of oils to it, so much so that I could feel it on my fingers after touching it. In the hand the cigar had a lot more weight to it than I 'm used to from a lancero. The pigtail cap, which seems a characteristic of this line, was well done. When I gave the cigar a squeeze I got a slight amount of give without any soft spots. Putting my nose to the wrapper brought the aroma if spice and leather with barnyard coming from the foot. After clipping and taking a cold draw I got tastes of chocolate and oak with an ok draw.
The cigar started off with flavors of chocolate, leather, earth, coffee and cinnamon with a slight amount of spice on the retrohale. After a short way into the cigar the spice and strength did start building but I wouldn't classify it higher than the upper end of medium. The draw was ok, and the burn was a little wavy.
Once I moved onto into the second third the strength did start to build slowly and was in the medium full range by the end of it. The flavors changed slightly to cinnamon, leather, earth, coffee, and cola with a slight amount of green herbal flavors on the finish. The draw opened up pretty well and it did produce a lot of smoke.
As I moved into the final third the spice did start to wane, but would come to the strongest point in the cigar very near the end. I got flavors of chocolate, leather, earth, wood and coffee with a slightly creamy finish. The burn did even itself out without needing some help from my lighter.
Overall this was a very enjoyable cigar. I would definitely like to smoke it again and try the other sizes of it. I do think that most smokers, except those most sensitive to strength, should be able to enjoy it. With the very reasonable price it could make an easy place in most smoker's rotations.

PDR I think is a very under rated brand. I really enjoy some of their lines and can see why others do as well. Good Price point and products should be a success
